About Tae Kwon Do
What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae means "foot" or "kicking".

Kwon means "fist" or "punching".

Do means "way of life, way of learning".

TaeKwon-Do is a korean martial art designed for the purpose of self-defense. It is a modern martial art from Korea that is characterised by its fast, high and spinning kicks. The art of Tae Kwon Do develops posture, graceful movement, excellent coordination, and attention to detail.Some people perceive TaeKwon-Do as a way of life. For them, it involves discipline, technique and mental training, resulting in a strong sense of confidence, spirit and character.

TaeKwon-Do is practiced in over 155 countries worldwide. It became an olympic sport during the Olympics in Korea in 1988. TaeKwon-do is also written as "tae kwon do" or "taekwondo."

Who Founded TaeKwon-Do?

TaeKwon-Do was founded by General Choi Hong Hi. His purpose of developing TaeKwon-Do was to produce a new Martial Art for the Korean Army. On April 11, 1955, TaeKwon-Do was formally named and established as a Martial Art.

Objectives of TaeKwon-Do

TaeKwon-Do is based upon 5 main objectives. The objectives are listed below:

to achieve physical fitness through positive participation;
to improve mental discipline and emotional equanimity;
to develop an appreciation for Taekwon-Do as a sport and as an art;
to learn self-defense skills;
to develop a sense of responsibility for one self and others.
